Negative Review

After several months' use i have to say it's a real disappointment. Here are some of the major points… positives. Being a fan of 5" screens for biking i thought i would try garmin's 5" sat nav. It's much, much more expensive than my old sat nav systems so i was expecting a quantum leap in performance. After several months' use i have to say it's a real disappointment.

Here are some of the major points…positives: good, solid bit of kit; excellent touch screen; well-designed mount/qr; good music player; can (with difficulty) custom colour maps; fast; some very useful forums. Negatives: screen is difficult to see on sunny days (this is a major problem and there's no cure); limited map display choices; voice directions verbosity (amount of info) is fixed; volume is only adequate; volume adjust disabled with bluetooth connection (in fact some very useful functions are disabled depending what's connected and what the unit's connected to). The best sat nav software for biking that i've used is igoprimo. It's not bike-specific but it's definitely better (and much cheaper) than garmin's. Unfortunately it's not readily available in a bike sat nav unit.

Questions & Answers

  • Does this have a speaker (thinking for use in a car)?
Simple answer - yes. The Zumo 590LM comes complete with 2 mounts. One is fixed and hardwired to the bike (or just use the mount and rely on the integral battery) but will only provide sound output to a headset (bluetooth or hardwired). The second mount is a suction cup windscreen mount for use in the car and plugs into a standard 12v power outlet. This in-car mount has a small speaker built into it so that you can hear the turn by turn instructions.
  • Are You Able to delete the speed camera section so it can be used in France, then re-load it on return ?As switching off function is not enough in fra
I believe it can only be turned off but having toured in Europe and having been stopped in France I did not have any issues. HTH
  • Probably a daft question, but does the 590 alert you to speed cameras, mobile speed trap camera zones and traffic light cameras?
Hi Baldy Dave, the 590 has alerts for fixed cameras, mobile camera sites and averaging cameras. It even alerts you to the fixed cameras on the variable speed section of the M1 when they are approaching on your side of the road only. I hope this is of assistance, Andy
  • can you load the maps on india on this unit if i buy it
Garmin offers some maps of the region the device is sold in free with its devices, and maps of other regions online which you can then download onto your Garmin GPS device. From the UK I can download maps for India for £50 - https://buy.garmin.com/en-GB/GB/maps/on-the-road-maps/city-navigator-nt/city-navigator-india-nt/prod65217.html but pricing / availability may differ in other places. • Thinking of buying. It will have hotels on menu but does it have camping sites? I ride with a mix of both
Camp and caravan sites are listed as a category in the Lodging section of the "where to" menu. The "where to" menu can be customised so that "Camp sites" will be seen in the main "where to" menu. The category "Lodging" can be added to the "up ahead" feature on the Zumo 590LM which shows hotels, petrol stations etc along your route as you travel. I can't find a way to add "camp and caravan sites" as its own category in the "up ahead" feature but it may be possible, I have not had my Zumo 590LM for long enough to find out how to fully use all of the features.
  • I have an older version Zumo 550 and it struggles to find satellite in cloudy weather and slow to reroute, is this model any better/faster?
I have had no problem so far . Does take a while to find signal in my workshop sometimes but it does always pick up signal . The lane prompt is fantastic
  • Can you expand the memory
Yes. There is a micro sd card slot in the battery bay. You can store and access additional maps or MP3 music files on the micro sd card.
  • Is it possible to lock the Zumo onto the bike mount?
I cannot lock the mount I have for my Zumo. I remove the unit and lock it away when I leave the bike parked. It is a simple one click operation. I'm not sure if you can buy a mount that will lock.
  • Hello! Can someone tell me what the box contains? (moutn, power cable etc) Thank you!
Hi, within the box (from memory) you get; 590LM head unit pre loaded with maps for Western Europe, Removable battery, Ram mount for attaching to a motorbike (can be used to fix to a boat if you wish but the map data is not very good at sea), Sucktion mout for use in a car (or bus, lorry - not so good in trains though), Wiring harness for a motorbike, 12V socket plug for a car and some basic quick start instructions. The unit has full instruction loaded and can be accessed via the touch screen. I hope this helps, Andy
  • On the Garmin site it says one of the features is twisty roads but on the comparison above it doesn't have it, so my question is does or doesn't it
Yes, the 590 does have the "Curvy Roads" option as one of the choices for Calculation Mode in the navigation preferences. Can't say how good it is as I've never actually used it - I normally plan a route in advance using waypoints to make sure it takes the roads I want to do. However the "Curvy Roads" option is definitely there and when I just tried it for a destination that would normally be straight up the motorway it chose a different route off the motorway on twistier roads, so it does make a difference.

Effectively truly worth the superior value, i truly am happy with the bluetooth connectivity.

Missing a few features but nevertheless adore it. Great to see that garmin are at last bringing throughout lots of of the attributes from the normal automotive gps models but there are nevertheless some factors lacking that would be good to have. Why garmin generally allow the bike units lag driving the relaxation of the range i do not know but it truly is often been that way. Plenty far more info here: http://www. Commain reason i am putting up this is to aid with 1 essential merchandise which is no for a longer time supplied with the 590 as it was with the 5xx and 6xx ranges - a casethe oem garmin scenario is selling listed here on amazon for 23. I identified this one: http://www. Uk/gp/product/b00jwkhtiu/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=utf8&psc=1for beneath £3 i believed it was perfectly well worth a go even if it turned out to be garbage.

It took a couple of months to get there (from china) but it was effectively worthy of it. The top quality is as great as the oem situation i experienced with my 660 and the 590 matches correctly.

The price tag harm, but definitely happy with the item, so it feels justified now. Having owned a garmin for the last 8 yrs, i'm genuinely hoping that they start out to strengthen their on the web map updates and unit management - the interface has always been appallingly clunky and lengthy-winded. As the this sat nav - i'm you should with the initial expertise.

Essential for my caterham and interchanges with my bike. . Demanded for my caterham and interchanges with my motorbike. Has to be resistant to vibration, moisture and have bluetooth connectivety for an ear piece since of the sounds. The only downside with this most recent product is that it is not lockable onto the car/bicycle holder and consequently has to be taken off and carried in all places.

Conclusion of Garmin zumo 590LM 5" Motorbike Sat Nav

Great to see that garmin are last but not least bringing throughout numerous of the capabilities from the common automotive gps models but there are nevertheless some issues lacking that would be good to have. Why garmin generally let the bike units lag powering the relaxation of the assortment i never know but it really is usually been that way. Lots much more info right here: http://www. Commain motive i am publishing this is to enable with a person crucial merchandise that's no for a longer period supplied with the 590 as it was with the 5xx and 6xx ranges - a casethe oem garmin circumstance is selling below on amazon for 23.

I found this just one: http://www. Uk/gp/merchandise/b00jwkhtiu/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=utf8&psc=1for underneath £3 i considered it was effectively really worth a go even if it turned out to be garbage. It took a pair of weeks to arrive (from china) but it was nicely worthy of it.

The quality is as excellent as the oem situation i had with my 660 and the 590 suits completely. Really, incredibly high priced - but, it has the common superb zumo build good quality and, in the box, absolutely almost everything you need to have for motorbike or car use. I obtain garmin shopper-treatment second-to-none and it's achievable to discuss directly with an operator must a difficulty arise (test that with tomtom. Even the as soon as-derided 'garmin express' that allows the unit, by way of a laptop or computer, to link with garmin, would seem to do the job nicely (though make confident you have the most recent variation put in).

It's also really welcome, as others level out, to have a selection of the capabilities applied in auto models for so extended. Clear even in bright sunlight, the display is a sizeable and critical improvement it dims quickly at night (and in tunnels) with crisper graphics than the 600 series the map depth, in standard check out, is just about proper - while in auto method you could want a lot more. The unit both of those locates satellites and recalculates when you've designed a improper transform with commendable pace. It's also attainable, at previous, to have a choice of windows down one particular side displaying, for example, 'arrival time', distance to go', and so forth. , though one has to say that their overall look is still toddler-college clunky with a lot of treasured house squandered between the terms and their border.

One particular truly bothersome attribute is the 'up ahead' screen it is really unachievable to switch off the display screen icons for any of the a few that you are compelled to find the listing currently being: velocity cameras, lodging, foods, highway-aspect aid, gasoline (petrol), parking, banks & atm and restrooms (bathrooms in english). Whilst you could want cameras and fuel exhibiting, having the screen littered with pics of knives and forks or 'restrooms' i uncover a hindrance to sane progress. How the bluetooth and iphone (and so on. ) one-way links work i've no thought - the plan of scrolling as a result of music lists, examining my stock trade portfolio whilst phoning lover no. three even though ear'oling down a twisty road is, to me, pure anathema.

Speed camera warnings (from the garmin database) are completely hopeless and significantly way too basic it's far improved to obtain the truly comprehensive ones from pocket gps that find long lasting and short-term ones with precision. However, the icons shown are tiny - a absurd situation when every single greasy-spoon cafe is lit up like tokyo at evening. A warning: mine arrived with 'avoidances' set by default to involve u-turns this may well be good if you happen to be on diavel, not so handy if riding 390 duke. It is also a new device, so, as an early adopter, be geared up for some still-to-be-discovered snags and standard updates of the firmware. Update tenth oct 2014:i have now protected all around 2000 miles with the unit and am normally pretty impressed with equally its performance and (relative) ease of use.

The quick and sleek scrolling of the screen is a true reward and the database thorough (although really don't hope each and every gasoline station shown to nevertheless exist. I do come across that it will at times select an obliviously unsuitable, for a longer period and slower aspect-highway route - even though i suppose that this may possibly well be a fault widespread to other garmin models. . Fantastic item but not these types of a substantial advance on my outdated zumo 550 as i believed it would be. Continue to, owning a five inch monitor on my zzr 1400 is a luxurious and the navigation is fantastic.

It isn't going to consider very long to receive satellites and the dynamic route steerage (altering the route on the go for site visitors factors or due to the fact you have not adopted the route accurately), is drastically speedier thanks to a a lot quicker processor. I haven't nonetheless requested it to locate windy routes with the curvy roadways attribute but that was partly why i acquired it. The option to have the satnav in portrait mode sounds good but in truth it is a very little tricky to do if you are utilizing bike electric power. You will want to wire it to the bike in this sort of a way to leave enough spare wire. That may glimpse a little bit ugly (as it would on my zzr) as you have to have to make it possible for the satnav holder to rotate.

If you have a prior garmin, say a zumo 550 or 600, beware that you will have to have to switch the charging wires if you use bicycle electrical power to assist your satnav. The holder for the unit is quite diverse. All the essential package will come with the unit. I would also point out that the satnav is not safe with the garmin holder. A speedy push of the button will release the unit.

I would never ever depart my device on the bike unattended but you ought to recall that. All round, a wonderful products that i am taking pleasure in. Needed for my caterham and interchanges with my motorbike. Has to be resistant to vibration, humidity and have bluetooth connectivety for an ear piece due to the fact of the sounds. The only draw back with this most recent model is that it is not lockable onto the car or truck/bicycle holder and therefore has to be taken off and carried just about everywhere. The value damage, but really pleased with the solution, so it feels justified now. Getting owned a garmin for the very last eight a long time, i'm actually hoping that they start to make improvements to their on line map updates and device administration - the interface has normally been appallingly clunky and very long-winded. As the this sat nav - i'm remember to with the original experience. This is a seriously 'complete' sat nav system.
